pattern fill info doesn't work
I'm pretty frustrated, because I've gone all over the web in search of how to do this procedure, but nothing works. I want to use an image as a pattern for the fill bucket. Amongst other things, I several times tried this tutorial from this forum (http://gimpforums.com/thread-export-patt...tern+fill) ----sorry, I have no idea how to make that link invisible under the word that gets highlighted---but it simply won't WORK. I was so thrilled when the one person posted the pictorial supplement, but even with that, no success. I'd prefer simply being able to use an image I've already got on my computer, rather than having to go thru the longwinded process of putting it into the GIMP pattern file.

Please, give me a step by step explanation: I'm brand new to GIMP, so you can't take anything for granted (I *do* know how to put my basic image on the GIMP canvas, and I do know how to use the fill bucket, even with the pattern images that are already programmed into GIMP's pattern selection).

Footnote: Even the durn "bold" and "underline" functions won't work for me. ARRRRRRGH!

RE: pattern fill info doesn't work
1. That is not a tutorial, just an explanation of exporting an image as a pattern.

Briefly:
You have an image that you want as a pattern.
a. If it is jpg, png just copy it to the patterns folder in your profile ..\.gimp-2.8\patterns. Then refresh the patterns (or restart Gimp if you do not know how to refresh, hint, look for the green circular arrow under the patterns)
b. You might want it as a Gimp .pat file so export it as something.pat to ..\.gimp-2.8\patterns ( then refresh... etc)

A temporary alternative. If not too large, less than 1024x1024 pix, copy the image. The first pattern is the current clipboard.

BBcodes - enter them manually see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

I already tried a. and b. before I posted my question here. I do not understand "the first pattern is the current clipboard"----could you please elaborate? And as for the BBCodes, that link was even more confusing. You're dealing here with someone who needs STEP BY STEP help. IOW, an example would be wonnnnderful! Thanx.

RE: pattern fill info doesn't work
The first pattern in the list is called "Clipboard" and corresponds to the current clipboard contents. So you can copy an image fragment (or a whole image) to the clipboard, and use it as pattern, without explicitly creating a pattern file (you can do the same with paintbrushes)

RE: pattern fill info doesn't work
OK, you're going to think I'm a complete dunce, but I don't know how to get the image of my choice into the clipboard. I copied an image I wanted to use in the bucket fill, but it's not "filling" the bucket. How do I do it, please? In your video, you've got those 2 little windows up in the left hand corner of the canvas, one with your fill pattern. How did you get those there? I'm going nuts trying to do what your video says. When I watched it the first time after you posted it, it made tons of sense, but until I actually tried it, I didn't realize there must be some step(s) I'm missing.

Thanx for bearing with me. {tail between legs}

RE: pattern fill info doesn't work
Everyone is a beginner sometime.

You can copy either the whole image or part of it (as a selection) using Edit -> Copy.
That will appear as both a clipboard brush and a clipboard pattern. Both the same but not get the two mixed up. This lasts until you do another copy.

This shows the whole image copied and it goes to the clipboard. There is a limit on size for the clipboard. In Gimp 2.8 it is 1024x1024 pixels. Notice that transparency is permitted if you need it. For patterns larger than 1024x1024 pix export your image as a png file and copy to your .\gimp-2.8\patterns folder. Gimp will use both jpg and png images as patterns.

Then as the video, use the clipboard pattern - it is always the first one - to fill either the whole image or if you make a selection fills that.

Here the background shows through in the transparent areas.

OK, that was super, Rich! I think I've finally got it down, and appended, please find my result, a token of appreciation.

RE: pattern fill info doesn't work
But that tessellation brings up another question (actually a whole bunch, but I'll limit myself to one right now Sleepy): is there any way I can get rid of the thin white fuzzy line that surrounds my black outline on each fish? I don't like that; it looks unfinished.

Thanx in advance.
