PATHS TOOL; Is it possible to split a path ?
Put differently: Is it possible to severe the connection between two nodes ?

Yes, ctrl-shift-click anywhere on it (if your C-S-click on a point, it removed the point). If you just Ctrl-shift, you add a point on the segment, so to open a segment between two points, Ctrl-shift to add two new anchors on it where you want it to open, then C-S-click the segment in between.

[solved]RE: PATHS TOOL; Is it possible to split a path ?
Thanks for reply. I marked this as [solved] as my question was answered.

Having watched a video and googled some more ... I'm left with the impression that 'components' of a path can only be connected at the end-nodes, not in a middle node. Is that correct ?

Why would anyone want to, one can ask ?
I started making a 3D cube like thing where each corner node obviously will connect to three other nodes. That isn't possible, which is fine as long as I know this and don't keep googling feeling like a moron for not getting it Smile

For other newbies: 'components' are strings of nodes and 'segments' belonging to the same path but unconnected to each other. Ugly illustration, two components:

*--*--*

*
The middle node of the first component cannot be connected.

RE: PATHS TOOL; Is it possible to split a path ?
yes, the components of a path are "strokes": these are continuous lines. If you want a "Y" shape, then you have a second stroke with an end point somewhere on the first stroke (but it doesn't need to be an "anchor point" on that stroke).

By the way, when you need to do this kind of things, a really useful option is "View/Snap to active path". Everything you move (anchors, tangent handles, or even segments you drag by the middle) will get attracted by existing strokes, and it becomes very easy to make a stroke that starts or finishes on another stroke, or is tangent to it.

For more on paths and strokes, I have a quick write up there: http://gimp-path-tools.sourceforge.net/paths-faq.shtml If you have python support on Gimp you'll also find several useful scripts (Tools) or fun ones (Decorations).

RE: PATHS TOOL; Is it possible to split a path ?
Something I've been looking for in vain is a display of XY coordinates for precise keyboard positioning. After selecting / adding a node it can be moved with the arrow keys. If there is an coordinate display updated by the keyboard I haven't found it.

The arrow keys is more precise. I'd much prefer fine tuning via the keyboard.

For some other tools like 'rectangle select' there is an keyboard updated coordinate display (in Toolbox). I wish this existed for all tools. PATHS TOOL isn't the only tool where I missed this.

Never noticed; Maybe because either I use guides, or when going freehand, I'm using 400% or 800% zoom so getting an accurate position is easy.
