Parallel/Cloned/Twin Layers for Tiled Textures?
Hi, I'm currently using GIMP for making textures for a 3D game. These textures are drawn by hand and making those "tileable" is a bit awkward most of the time. There's all sorts of manual methods but I'm wondering if there's something that will take care of this in real time. Anyway what I'm looking for:

Is there a way to create layer groups which contain the very same layers at different locations? Or displaying the same layer group in two places next to each other? So stuff I draw in one place is "cloned" in real time to another layer or group? What I want is the ability draw seamlessly, so when I draw at or past the layer borders on the bottom I automatically draw at the top border.

I can kinda achieve this manually either by offsetting a layer or by making the layer bigger in size than the texture I want and then cutting and pasting the details beyond the actual texture size to the opposite side. But those are very awkward procedures, especially when working with many layers that have to be drawn and edited separately. Is there maybe some automated feature that takes care of this for me in real time?

I think you want the Clone tool, set it to a radius of half the size of your tillable texture.
Make sure your canvas size & layers are big enough for the layers on all sides that you clone to.

As far as I know, you can only clone real-time on the current layer, so you'll want to extend the layer to the image/canvas size (see below)

1. Image > "Canvas size" adjust to size of however many textures your tiling (width & height (x)2 or more)
2. after, Layer > "Layer to image size..." duplicate layer and clone from that copy to an empty spot.
3. Clone tool: set the Brush to 2. Hardness 100
- ctrl + click to define a clone source (your texture) Then draw on an empty spot besides, above or below.

Hope this helps!

If your not a beginner with gimp, there is a resyntisizer(heal-selection) plugin that could automatically clone around the texture in real-time if you make the canvas size border around the sizes of the texture(9 tiles, the texture being in the middle)

Let me know and I'll explain/show & link you to the plugin later, this all I have time for right now.

I do not know of anything that will do what all you want. Closest I know for while you are drawing is;

MyPaint which will mirror laterally. Layers but no layer groups.

or (if you can tear yourself away from M$ and install linux)

Krita which will mirror both vertically and horizontally. Layers and layer groups.

Both these will export in open raster format .ora - (a sort of multi-layer png format) which Gimp will open for further processing.
