Paper?
I have always loved GIMP but come from a pen/pencil/paper/oil/canvas background and am wondering if anyone has suggestions about how to best get a feel of real paper while I'm drawing. I would love to come to GIMP and select "Bristol Vellum" and a "#4B" pencil. Or go with Arches 100 Cotton and India ink...are there any options for this kind of thing? If I want to sit down and do an oil painting can I select "gessoed white canvas" and oil paints? Or watercolor paper with watercolors?

Additionally, for my tablet, I would love to have it actually _feel_ like paper: does anyone know how badly the tablet will work if I put a sheet of paper over the tablet and try to draw through it?

Any thoughts or suggestions as to how other artists have addressed this would be great. Thank you!!!

You have used Gimp so you must know that 'painting' is just changing the state of pixel values in a defined area. You can apply a simulated texture afterwards but AFAIK not to start with.

Well you have a tablet so try it. That is what I did. A little experimenting here and my old Wacom Volito (5" x 3.5" - I think the modern equivalent is the Bamboo) works through a paper overlay. Used a medium textured Bockingford 300 g/sq.m. watercolour paper. There was some 'feel' with the paper, in the brush effect, no real difference between with and without.

On a more practicle level, Gimp is not the best tool for some types of artwork. You might look at MyPaint and if willing to install a linux distro then Krita.

Other considerations,
The 'nib' on the tablet stylus can wear out. Wacom nibs can be replaced but I think that the wear will be much greater if used over a rough paper.

There are many and varied 'digital brushes' you can change size, colour, maybe angle but you are 'using-what-you-are-given'. That might not suit you.

this is the comparison, with paper over tablet, without paper in PClinuxOS and Krita 2.7.5

RE: Paper?
Awesome suggestions. Thanks very much. I'm already on Linux and may even have Krita installed already. Just have always gone first to GIMP for most of my art needs. I have a Wacom Intuos 3, and yes, the nibs do wear out but they can be replaced. Just feel like at some level there ought to be a drawing/painting program that gives you more of the decisions one has when using real media: choose the paper, choose the medium, THEN choose things like colors and brush sizes. Will definitely look into Krita. If anyone else has suggestions I'd love to hear them! :-)

RE: Paper?
@rich2005, okay, I've gotten Krita installed (via Calligra Suite) and notice that you have a nice rich selection of brush presets in that image you've got above. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to install similar brush sets in Calligra. Did you make those yourself? What is the process of installing them? When I add a .kpp file to the "paintoppresets" I get the icon with an "X" over it, indicating (I guess) that I can't use it. Can you possibly PM me with any tips or suggestions? I know it's Krita based but would be super helpful... Thanks!
