Outline Text in GIMP 2.8
I know this question has probably been asked numerous times, and I've seen the answer to it, however I can't find the option to do it.

This is my text tool options when I have it open. I can't find the "Create Path from Text" option. Help please?

Right click the text layer in the Layers list and then "Text to Path"

RE: Outline Text in GIMP 2.8
Is there a way to change the text outline on-the-fly... change outline thickness, color, etc... the same way I can in Paintshop Pro? Does anyone know of a plugin that will do this? Doing it as described above is fine if I get it right the first time, but gets tedious if I want to try different outline settings to see what looks best.

Thanks

No way I know. If you have this kind of requirement, you may want to investigate using Inkscape.

This produces a black box around all my text. How do I outline the text, like every other graphics program I've ever seen allows me to do easily?

RE: Outline Text in GIMP 2.8
Text-to-path does what it says on the box, so it only produces a [url=http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-using-paths.html]path[/path]. This path can be used for several purposes, in particular you can "stroke" it with a line or the desired width/color/style (see Edit/Stroke path, or the Stroke icon in the Paths list), but you can also use it to obtain a selection or even edit it before using it(*).

(*) In my signature below, the "O" is fully closed in the original font, and I had to edit the path to create a connection between the center of the O and the "plate".

You have to make a selection out of the path, then make the selection a little bit bigger and let GIMP redraw your selection.

Why "make the selection a little bit bigger"?

Because when you have a small font size the outline often over"writes" the original text.
With a increased selection this problem does not happen.

When you do that you round off the sharp bits. Better make a selection on the path an invert it. Then the stroke is half width but all outside the character. This said, the outline is usually done on big enough characters...
