OSX Lion and (maybe) no X11
Hi guys, I have seen a few posts and reports that OSX lion won't use X11. If this is the case, what is the future for Gimp on the Mac?

RE: OSX Lion and (maybe) no X11
X11 is an add-on on OSX, Even the current crop doesn't really use X11, it is there for portability of other apps. So either someone adapts X11 to work on Lion, or someone adapts the GTK graphics lib that Gimp uses to talk directly to the OSX display support (like it currently does on Windows, AFAIK).
The Linux version is actually in the same bag, future Linux versions won't use X11 (which is an architecture dating back to the 80s and designed to support remote displays) but use Wayland instead (from which much better performance is expected). But since GTK is fairly central to a lot of Linux apps already, one can expect an speedy adaption to Wayland. ![]() |

Thanks for the reply. I love Gimp; it's become like the adopted child of the family, lol. I've used Photoshop a fair bit and it's OK (massively overrated in my opinion), but not worth the $$$ asked for it. Worst case scenario, I'd install Vmware and install Linux. Is Wayland for Apple as well? Cheers Lightman |

Looks like at the moment it's not working:
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table/tags/_g/index_tags/_g Scroll down and you're see Gimp listed as not working. Lightman |

RE: OSX Lion and (maybe) no X11
Following instructions I found in a youtube video on installing Gimp in OS X Lion, I downloaded the 'Leopard' version of Gimp from the Gimp on OS X slite, http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html and it worked. So I assume Lion does include X11 in some form.

What worked for me personally was installing gimp via mac ports, then installing xquartz 2.6.3. I'm on a Macbook Air running OSX 10.7.2 and so far everything seems to be working. |

Just deleted Gimp (Snow Leopard version) from my Lion OS Mac and downloaded and installed the Leopard version - works great! X11 automatically starts when Gimp is started, so there is no issue there as far as I can see. Seems to be much easier than installing thru mac ports and installing xquartz 2.6.3 - altho, I am not really very tech savvy, so the easier the better for me! |

RE: OSX Lion and (maybe) no X11
BIG SMILE! I just barely have my Mac Mini with Lion up and running and have managed to find Mac equivalents to most of my most used Windows programs. I was counting on GIMP to replace Photoshop. UH-OH! Bad news at first! Fortunately, I ended up viewing this thread, downloaded the Leopard version, and I'm in business! So I just came back to say thanks.
