Older But Not Wiser...
You know there are a lot of wise sayings, made up by old people. Things like;
Never stick a fork in a toaster.
Don't hold a cat by its tail.
Don't go to a motorcycle bar and ask for a glass of milk.
    Always wear clean underwear.
Well I am adding to the list of wise quotes today... "Never update your OS when everything works the way it is working, because you will most likely make a horrid mess of things, and you have to sheepishly ask your husband to repair it."

I am running Kubuntu 12.04 and my husband is my resident in house tech support. He told me that I should consult him about updates or upgrades to the system. I was looking at my "Package Manager" and I noticed a little insignificant button titled "Check for Updates". It gave me a laundry list of over 60 updates. My husband was hidden in his secret evil lair... he calls it a LAN room. So I hit the update and wouldn't you know it, they broke the whole system. It had to be them because all I did was press a button and enter my password. It is not like they gave me a choice.

My graphics no longer worked, I was afraid all my files would be toast. The clever boy my husband is, he has the OS in another partition from where all my files are kept. After 80 to 90 minutes of cussing at my PC. He has me back up and running without a file or icon out of place.

So there you go, another wise motto to live by be sure to jot it down because I am having it patented or copyrighted. Who knows it might become as famous as some other words of wisdom.
Excellence is doing ordinary things better than cure.
Loving once and only once is a small breeze that doesn't make a wind storm.
Good advice is always certain to be ignored, but depend on your eyes when you stumble over pebbles.
Nature is often hidden, education is progressive, art is to represent, just as fish get the early worm.

"Always make a backup 'root' partition image before any major update"

and
This acronym from the Diskworld W Y G I W Y G A I N G W
which stands for

RE: Older But Not Wiser...
you can add this quote to you list too lol,

" software & security updates, nay the hardware unlessl it's broke/incompatible 'cause if it ain't broke, don't fix it' "

I find that even on wndoze, some hardware updates & optional updates can mess up the system. I always read the updates if they have info & update the graphics card as a last resort(if available.)

Don't feel bad though I accidentally updated a video card on my old vizta machine & had to reinstall it ><

RE: Older But Not Wiser...
My husband read the replies over my shoulder and wanted me to tell everyone that he said,

"My wife could make a brick not work correctly given any time alone with it."

Also he said,

"Linux Kubuntu doesn't like the ATI graphics drivers which are not open source but proprietary. The Linux VGA drivers work much better but she must have it to play her online games."

I still insist it is in no way "my fault". It all a bunch of voodoo. Someone hexed my computer for sure. . Big Grin

Yeah I like nvidia video cards, they're performance work horses Smile

My new compute is a quad core amd rdon 7600 (I don't consider 2008 vinatage, thats 4 years from the ten year mark, collectible maybe...) its super fast ruining win8 so Im happy XD

@ofnuts: With regards with getting a solid state, it would be the wiser choice. To my knowledge you don't have to defrag it if any at all since the disk has no arm to spin, its like a flash drive. Plus it will be faster for data access.
-Definitely not for those who are on a budget though unless you can find a sale.
-How much ram did you upgrade from? 4-8gb is optimal. & what is the new graphics card? (out of curiousity)
See you all on the weekend!, going to be busy until then.

This sounds like a geeky version of rednecks talking about Ford and Chevy. She says, as she tip toes away from her thread...
