Nondestructive editing with layers?
I teach technology classes, and would like my curriculum to use free software where-ever possible. At the moment, I am developing a class and Photoshop is the only tool I know of that works the way I want it to. I am hoping that GIMP can too, and would like the help of the community to learn how.

I have a base image, and about a dozen mask images. What I currently do in Photoshop is that I open the base image, and use what they call adjustments to apply certain basic effects (such as hue shift, level balance, etc) at only those areas specified by the masks. Notably, adjustments can be made to only effect a single layer/mask.

It works very well and I am quite pleased with it primarily because all of my changes are nondestructive. I can save my file, open it the next day, go to a specific adjustment layer, and see that I set (say) the saturation of the grass mask to +21.

I've used GIMP before (not professionally, not too in depth) and have looked at the layers/masks system but can't quite replicate the behavior of Photoshop. I do grok the use of blending modes, however.

Can GIMP, or other software, do what I want it to? If so, how?

Thank you for your time!

PS: I may not be able to reply to this thread in a timely manner.

This isn't in Gimp currenty. The best you can do is make an invisible copy of your layer to keep its original version.

Unfortunate! Thank you for the response all the same.

Do you know if any other free software has that capability?

RE: Nondestructive editing with layers?
Awesome! Thank you!

I tried looking for some sort of development roadmap for confirmation, but couldn't find anything this specific... or a date. I saw that version 2.8 took 3.5 years.

I need the feature in ~9 months from now. Can I reasonably expect that it will be available to the public in that time?

Thank you for all of your help!

RE: Nondestructive editing with layers?
See http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php/Roadmap

AFAIK the non-destructive editing is really part of GEGL (http://www.gegl.org/)
