No success with JPEG 2000 plugins
Hi Gimpers,

I'm using GIMP 2.6.11 with Windows 7 ULT and I'm having no success with the use of the JPEG 2000 plugins that I downloaded from this plugin registry webpage...
http://registry.gimp.org/node/24582

Inside the "rare_plugins.zip" zipped folder download there is a file named "jp2.exe" which I put inside my GIMP plugins folder (Program Files>GIMP-2.0>lib>gimp>2.0>plug-ins>jp2.exe)... but when I try to open a JPEG 2000 file I get a Windows app crash panel and then a GIMP message that shows the path of the plugin and the path of the file and the message, ".jp2 failed: Procedure 'gimp-jp2-load' returned no return values".

I've also downloaded a JPEG 2000 GIMP plugin from this webpage...
http://registry.gimp.org/node/9899
Here I get a "jp2.tar.gz" file which, after being decompressed, gives me a "jp2" folder that is full of files, but it is unclear what to do with this folder, since the GIMP plugins folder otherwise only contains single ".exe" files, like the one that I installed as described above that came in the "rare_plugins.zip" file that I downloaded first.

The "docs.gimp.org" page that describes plugin installations is vague and says, among other things about writing plugins in the "1.3.2 Windows" section, "...either you have an environment in which you can build software, or you don't. If you don't, then your best hope is to find a precompiled version of the plugin somewhere (or persuade somebody to compile it for you), in which case you simply need to put it into your personal plugin directory..."... see the link below...
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-scripti...ns-install

Does anyone have any experience with installing and successfully using either of these JPEG 2000 plugins?

Thanks,

digiday

RE: No success with JPEG 2000 plugins
Hi ofnuts,

Good to get a reply from you again.

First, why doesn't the email notification ever work with this forum?... no matter that I select "Subscribe and receive email notification of new replies" or that I have it selected as default in my forum prefs, I never get email notifications from this forum.

Anyway, I downloaded "ImageMagick" from ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagick/ and selected the "ImageMagick-6.6.5-10.zip" file, and upon opening that zipped file, I see no obvious installer or .exe files in that folder.

I have a suspicion that this is a command-line app... possibly one someone recommended to me in the past on another forum on a different topic... I think this is possible since the "Quick Start Guide" gives this info for Windows...

"Windows Vista, XP, and NT Install:
Download one of
ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagic...ws-dll.exe
ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagic...static.exe
ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagic...ws-dll.exe
ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagic...static.exe

and execute it (or "open" it from your browser) to start the installation
program.
Once ImageMagick is installed, Select Start->Programs->Command Prompt. In
the Command Prompt window type

convert logo: logo.gif
imdisplay logo.gif

If you have an X11 server, from the Command Prompt window type

set DISPLAY=:0
display

VMS Install:
Type
unzip ImageMagick.zip
set default [.imagemagick]
@make
identify -verbose logo:"

I appreciate your recommendation.

The "jp2.tar.gz" file opens okay with IZArk, but this is the one that needs to be compiled with other files, right?

Isn't there anything with a normal installer that isn't a command-line app?

Why isn't the plugin "jp2.exe" working in GIMP?

Thanks,

digiday

RE: No success with JPEG 2000 plugins
Hi ofnuts,

I received another recommendation for IrfanView too, so I went ahead and installed IrfanView and its plugin package and finally I was able to open a 13 MB JPEG2000 file and convert it to a 35 MB regular JPEG file.

Thanks for the reference... I'll be getting in to IrfanView more in the coming days... now at last I can see in detail the small writing that is on this large image.

To "see the light" in ImageMagick I'd have to "see allot of command-line tutorials", so that isn't an option that is needed now since IrfanView did the job.

PS: no emails come through at all from this forum... never have.

Thanks,

digiday

Hi buyriftgear,

Though this thread is over two months old, I do appreciate your reference.

IrfanView ended up working very well for me.

Thanks,
