NL filter?
Howdy folks-

I'm a light image tweaker- for a long time Irfanview was enough for me [GIMP and Photoshop could learn a lot from Irfanview on ergonomic graphic tools design!] but it sorely lacks an irregular selection tool, sob.
So here i am with nerdy GIMP and its online-only and non-searchable "help" [shriek!].
I've had it installed for only 15 minutes and ran into my first wall: the NL filter seems to do nothing. I've tried at every different setting possible and scrutinized before-after results. They're absolutely identical. On my Windows 7 system it's utterly inert.
Ok, i give up- what's the secret password to make it work?! Unless i make some progress here it looks like i'll be using Irfanview for 90% of my tweaks, and GIMP only to strip out backgrounds. A shame for an obviously powerful, if user-unfriendly program.

What did the sadist do to the masochist? Nothing.

RE: NL filter?
Have you tried this check list.

Otherwise the documentation is not very hard to find, open the index page of the HTML doc (on your PC or the online version), hit Ctrl-F and search "NL" and you are quickly led there.

The effects of this filter are rather subtle, you have to drag the sliders far to the right to see something obvious. Make sure you have checked the "Preview" box in the dialog.

RE: NL filter?
I have to say I was with ofnuts in asking what the NL filter is, but then I found it on the Filters>>Enhance menu

I think you'll find that Google is quite good at searching the GIMP documentation site: (first result searching for gimp nl filter)

In fact you can use Google's site specific search: nl filter

It seems to do something for me using GIMP 2.8.10 on Windows 7 if I set Edge enhancement and crank the sliders up:
Otherwise it seems to be a very subtle effect.

RE: NL filter?
Made when smaller images were the norm, apply on a large image and you probably will not find much change.

I can not ever remember using the non-linear filter in anger. Described as a swiss-army type of filter. Maybe, but depending on the enhancement there will be better.

What exactly do you want to do?

Help files, If you are unable to install the Gimp help files. There is a good PDF here

IrfanView? - all in the eye of the beholder.
