new gimp 8.2.0
recently dwmloaded the new version of gimp. Awesome, except that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set the brush color to use the gradient selected. In the older version, there was a box you could check in the tool options. Now I do not have that option box.

In 2.8 the "paint dynamics" have been greatly augmented/enhanced. You can define you own paint dynamics in great detail:
  • open the "paint dynamics" list:
    • from the paintbrush tool options:
Click on the icon for the dynamics (next to "Dynamics off") to obtain the list of preset dynamics, then on bottom right icon (dynamics icon)
    • from the image window menu: Windows/Dockable dialogs/Paint dynamics
  • Add a new set (2nd left icon at bottom)
  • Call it "Gradient" or somesuch
  • Tick the box at the intersection of the "color" row and "fade" column
  • Close the dialog
  • Check that the brush paint dynamics selector is set to "Gradient"

RE: new gimp 8.2.0
This is like thread " Beginners / Using the Gradients with a Brush in 2.8" but I think it is so basic that I am adding the same post to both threads.
I too wrestled long with this problem, and only found how to cope from these forums. Accepting that you *can* workaround it, the solution proposed is extremely obscure. A definite regression of usability that one hopes will be put right. 2.6 was fine: the familiar 'paint using gradient' drawing tools option, *and* the brush dynamics drop-down list. This would work equally with the new complicated 2.8 brush dynamics, would it not?
How do we ask for the 2.6 scenario next time around?

RE: new gimp 8.2.0
We have not halucinated. Section 2.7.10 of the *current* Gimp Help - reflecting the previous situation - says
"Painting with a gradient
Each of GIMP's basic painting tools allows you the option of using colors from a gradient. This enables you to create brushstrokes that change color from one end to the other."
and
"Use a gradient with a drawing tool:

You can also use a gradient with pencil, brush or airbrush tools if you check Use color from gradient. In the example below the option is checked for a pencil tool. You see in the drawing in the right side the succession of the colors of the gradient (to infinity...).

Figure 7.25. How to use rapidly a gradient with a drawing tool"

This option has simply disappeared - unnecessarily - from 2.8 with its complicated brush dynamics.
I have formally filed a Bugzilla report.
