Need to print multiple images on single sheet for art piece
Hello, I'm new here, thank you for your time. I've worked in publishing editorial forever, so use computers but don't have broad knowledge, and have some but not much experience using various photo programs, mostly to crop and scale pictures for web and print applications. I'm happy to find Gimp and look forward to a long happy relationship with a real graphics program. I'm using Windows 8 with Classic Shell. I've read the user manual about how to scale images for print applications in GIMP, so I'm clear on that part.

I'm making a non-digital multimedia 3-D diorama for an NYC art show I'm in. I am creating collages of cultural images for the inner walls of my diorama box, which is large at 36"x24". What I want to do is scale down 200-250 cultural images from around the web in varying sizes from 1" to 2", put as many as will fit on each sheet of 8.5x11 photo paper, and print them out on my inkjet. I will cut them out and paste them physically. I cannot do the collage in the computer because of the size of the required output and the irregular shape of the walls, and because the collaged photos will be interacting with other handbuilt elements on the walls.

So, I need to gather and scale photographs, then set up for multiple photos per print page where each photo is discrete (not collaged). I need to develop an approach to how I do this, and am hoping that someone(s) here can give me a step-by-step about how to do this most efficiently. I saw someone talking about batching commands, and someone saying that GIMP is overkill for that type of need. Any thoughts welcome, I must be efficient whatever I do.

Thank you for your time. --Victoria

RE: Need to print multiple images on single sheet for art piece
First operation: find how big an image your printer will actually print (many printers have side margins, most printers have a top or bottom margin). When you try to print an image that doesn't fit the printable area (often because your image is assumed to fit the full page), the printer driver scales it down so all your careful dimensioning is lost. To do so: File>New, and enter a size in inches (8.5x11, for instance) (in the "Advanced options" you can additionally set a realistic print definition (300DPI)). Print it, and measure the result and check for missing borders. If nothing is missing but your image is smaller that 8.5x11, then you have the maximum print area.

To produce your composite images:
  • File>New, and enter the dimensions found above and the relevant print definition. You can also define a template to make it easier...
  • At the bottom left of the image, a little selector lets you choose the measure unit. By default it says "px" (pixels) but you can change it to work in inches. The inches/pixels conversion is done using the print definition you gave when creating the image. Of course, since your display has a lower resolution (usually 100-120px) at 100% the physical size on your display is larger than what it will be in print.
  • Then for each image:
    • File>Open as layer to add a new image as a layer to the current image
    • Crop the layer (Crop tool (Crop) with "Current layer only")
    • Scale the layer ("Layer/Scale layer", (or the Scale tool, but unless you are careful you can distort the image).
    • Move the layer to its final position on the page with the Move tool (Move)
  • When the page is full, save it and print it

RE: Need to print multiple images on single sheet for art piece
If I might ask another question on this thread, or I will also try posting it separately if no one answers here, I was able to set up the first page with multiple layers and it stayed in portrait mode. Now, both documents that I have created, the Page Setup still says Portrait, but the working area on my monitor has changed to landscape. It's making the documents look weird and I can't find a way to return them to portrait. It seems that there is another conflicting command somewhere telling the program to lay out the photos in landscape orientation. Thank you for your time.

Without more information this is a real stab in the dark.

Did you try and adjust the image proportions using x and y resolution.
In this example I have a canvas 500x1000 pix but I set the x resolution to twice the y resolution.

Adding an image to this canvas looks fine with the default Gimp view settings (dot-for-dot)

But if you turn dot-for-dot off to see what the image prints/views as then you will get some distortion.

Other than that, baffled, can you pop your image with layers to somewhere like dropbox
edit: that info will show up in the image properties as resolution.
