Star Need advice to improve this pic
Went to zoo recently with my neice. There I took pics of this Clouded Leopard. Sitting in the shadows of a tree, it was barely visible to the naked eye. So I was pretty excited to see its features come pretty clearly in this pic.
But, since it was in a large enclosed cage, the thick wires of the cage were between me and this subject, and there wasnt much space for me to move back and take the cage completely out-of-focus.
You will see the cage wire as diagonal stripes of whitish noise over some sections of the picture (like, over leopard's face). See attached pic.

Any suggestions on how to remove those translucent white stripes from this picture in GIMP (or any other free tool)? Huh

Also, constructive suggestions on how I could better this picture in otherways or have better captured this picture are welcome!!

Thanks, in advance !!

My usual practise to make photos 'pop' seems to do a reasonable job at removing the imperfections.
  • Duplicate the layer containing the image
  • Rename the layer to 'blur'
  • Blur the layer until you can still make out the details (experiment to see what works best)
  • Change the layer mode to Grain Extract
  • New from Visible
  • Set the 'Visible' layer's mode to Grain Merge
  • Set the Blur layer's mode To Overlay
  • New from visible

Thanks!! Really appreciate the detailed steps. Will try it out and post back the result.

RE: Need advice to improve this pic
sriscoop, I noticed that you have had enough tips on how to try to deal with that image.
Possibly any of these tips must have pleased you.
I add only two other options.
With G'MIC
Local Contrast Enhacement - exploring the settings, you will find good results.
Dynamic Range Increase - even with the default values, the result is already interesting.
