Moving layers in PSD file
Hello,

I'm trying to move text in a PSD file that I opened in Gimp. I've recorded a Screencast video here, (removed link because image is not quite ready to be shared with the outside world;-) which shows what I'm trying to do.

Basically, I have a line of text which is several layers deep that says "IS THE NORM". I need to move the word "the" over to the left a little because it's a little too close to the word "norm".

However, when I select it and Cut, nothing happens. I tried locking the layer, even though I don't really know what that means - just saw it on YouTube and figured I'd try it - but no luck.

Anyway, the video describes what I'm doing so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks a bunch,
Nancy

RE: Moving layers in PSD file
First thing you need to do is go back and edit your post. Remove the comma after the video link url, it prevents the link opening in a browser.

Next one, Never a good idea to use .psd files. Gimp only has limited support for these. Lots of PS filters and effects do not work and as in this case, text is reduced to a plain bitmap layer.

Good news is, I do not see why you should not be able to do what you want.

1. You said nothing happened when you selected and cut.

something did happen, you cut a small chunk out of the bottom layer, that was the active layer.

You need to go and click on the 'is thenorm' layer then you should be able to select and cut.

I would then paste it straight back in. In Gimp you get what is called a 'floating selection' that you can move. Once in position, use the little anchor icon to fix the selection.

The only snag that newcomers to Gimp sometimes have with moving a selection is sometimes you move the whole layer. On the other side of Gimp, with the move tool selected, choose the selection option in the tools settings.

RE: Moving layers in PSD file
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me and I recorded another video. (removed link because image is not yet public)

Thanks,
Nancy

RE: Moving layers in PSD file
Yes, very confused, do not panic.

I see your video and will raise you another.

I had to make a couple of layers to represent your complex PS image file but the principles are the same.

hope it helps.

note on youtube
If you can not hear any audio and the video is very small, not my fault, it is youtube flash settings
adjust the youtube player

RE: Moving layers in PSD file
Thank you SOOOOOO much! The video was perfect and showed me exactly what I was doing wrong (just about everything, it seems). Your patience is much appreciated. I even moved the yellow layer forward (easy if you know how...lol) and it looks great against a dark background. The text is moved just like I wanted it to be. See attached if you're curious.

Thanks again!
Nancy
