move a block, then move a block again
I want to select a block, and drag it to a new spot. Then, I want to select another block in the same image and drag it to another spot, and repeat over and over. 3 years using the gimp and I cannot do this yet.

What I do is drag one area, save and close the image, then open the image again. Is this the way the gimp works? Please help.

RE: move a block, then move a block again
What you need to do is cut the block from the image, then paste to a new layer.

Rectselect Select the part of the image you want to move
Edit > Cut
Edit > Paste as new layer..
(click the "Clipboard" layer & name it if you have several blocks to move)

Then you can move that layer without disturbing the below master original layer.

*Note:
Pay attention to the mouse/cursor icon though (see below pic):
Move with the mouse
- means you are moving the currently selected layer(in layers window.)

Move with a hand pointing to the side icon
- means you are moving a layer under/above the one selected in the layers window.

Move with cancel symbol "(/)"
- means you cannot move or the area your trying to move is transparent/no layer.

*click for important mouse details

(if you have a hidden layer/off canvas, "Image > Fit canvas to layers" can usually reveal it, make it easier to move.)

If you don't want to accidentally move a layer below, click the eye icon then select your above layer & move it.

Just an fyi / sidenote:
After you have cut & paste your block, the layer will have its own boundary size as you can see by the yellow dashed outlined, you may only see the last icon combo " Move (/) " when the image/background layer is moved revealing the checkerboard.
- Or if you clicked the eye off & the layer is still selected. But if you move on a visible layer you will get " Move with a hand pointing to the side "

"In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than fear of failure." BC
