More than 12 colors in the palette?

More than 12 colors in the palette?
Is there a way to have more than 12 colors contained in my color palette in GIMP?

In the image seen below, I see that it can remember 12 colors in the main palette on the left, but with the color dialog palette on the right, there seems to be no way to add or change colors there, but it has more room than for 12 colors.

Is there a plug-in that allows GIMP to remember more than 12 colors? I did a search in the plug-in registry but I didn't find one.

Thanks,

digi

Yes, if you create the Palette in the palette editor, it can have up to 256 colors. And if you make it the active palette, you get these 256 choices in the palette tab of the color selection dialog:

Okay, got it... thanks allot.

This page helps too...
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-concepts-palettes.html

I went to 'Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Palettes>' then 'New palette' from the bottom buttons on the 'Palettes' palette, then dragged and dropped my colors from the Toolbox foreground color square and created a new palette and named it... now I have it as a choice in my 'Palettes' palette and in my FG/BG palette, and it also shows up in the Toolbox color dialog.

Also, may I ask how you made your nice chrome logo?... is there a tutorial for that?

Thanks allot,

digi

RE: More than 12 colors in the palette?
Thanks O-N,

But I get this message on that page...
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /b2evo/index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache mod_qos/9.69 mod_fcgid/2.3.6 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at penguinpetes.com Port 80"

Also, I corrected that link above in my last post.

I know you may have used the chrome filter (or maybe gradient grays) and the bevel filter in some way, but I'm not sure how you got the complete look of that logo... or is there a type of "Action" plug-in similar to Photoshop Actions?

Thanks,

digi

Try this link otherwise google for "penguinpetes gimp metal"

As far as I remember:
- create selection on future metal part
- fill with light (top) to dark (bottom) gray gradient
- in new layer, fill selection then keep selection and blur (blur applies only inside the selection)
- use new layer as bump map over the other layer
- start Curves tool, and replace the straight diagonal by a very wavy line around the diagonal

RE: More than 12 colors in the palette?
Thanks... did a search and here's the new link to that tutorial, same as your link, but it just doesn't work when placed on this page for some reason, even though the URL is exactly the same as the one that works from anyplace else...

http://penguinpetes.com/b2evo/index.php?p=351

Anyway, the tutorial itself worked very nicely and I've customized my own version.

Yours has a nice brushed aluminum name plate look that is very original.

Thanks,

digi

Actually the link works if you copy/paste it in your URL bar. That site must have some kind of anti-referer(sic)(*) defense (must have found images hot-linked or else).

As to the nice aluminum look, it a bit a stroke of luck Smile Just have to start with the right gray.

(*) due to a historical spelling error in the HTTP header specification, HTTP sites see referers and not referrers Smile

I'll take your word for it on the HTTP thing.

You must have worked with the bump map settings to get the rounded bevel looks too. What font is that, or is it custom?

RE: More than 12 colors in the palette?
The rounded bevel is just the blur-cut-by-selection explained above.

The font is "Gilgongo"

RE: More than 12 colors in the palette?
Thanks for the font reference.

I get that the rounded corners in this technique come from the blurring and selection, but your logo's recessed letters are more rounded inward, rather than cut, as seen in the detail of a portion of my logo below that has more of a chiseled look ... that is more how the tutorial's bump map settings make it come out.

Whereas your logo's recessed letters have more of a gradual indentation... if that makes any sense... I like that.
