Matching Color's

How would i go about making the dark brown part of this texture the same color/tone of the brighter area? everything I try makes it turn grey, and in between the two sections wierd edge/discolorations appear.

The actuall texture is much bigger so doing it for me with the image above is no help at all.

Paint on that layer with gray 50% (127,127,127) the parts you want to lighten. You can adjust efficiency two ways: paint with a different gray (lighter/darker) or adjust the "dodge" layer transparency.

Thanks the second layer idea certainly made repairing the edges extremely easy.

But afterward matching shades there still clearly diffearent Its quite simular to how I tryed the first time. I'm a total beginner but i assume its because there original colors. If i was to do the same again it would get brighter but not closer. Is there anyway to match them closer?
