masking
I have an object with a complete white background.
I am trying to mask out the white or erase it so I can make it a PNG with transparent background. I need help.

After completing that awesome above tutorial on selection/background delete to transparent.
First save a .xcf backup if you haven't already (save as...)

Then,

Export the image with the layers as a .PNG
Go to "File > Export..."
pick PNG or type "name.png" click "export"

In the PNG save as dialog box, check on
-save background color
-Save layer offset
(if the brightness or gamma is affected, retry with "[]save gamma" checked)

RE: masking
I think you put the wrong tutorial up because it was about not having jagged edges on curves.
I need a tutorial on selection/background delete to transparent.
How do you do that?
I selected a background; but it wants to save the background and delete the foreground.

RE: masking
I am assuming you added the alpha. If your background is actually solid white and not a mix of off whites you can select color and delete. If you have a white halo around the object then you need to grow the selection by 1 or 2 pixels. and delete.

Ofnuts is telling you how to preserve the edge of your work. Since many times you can end up with a hard edge.
