Making seamless tiles?
Back in the days of Photoshop 6, I used to make seamless tiles manually using a filter that wrapped the image around the edges. I'd wrap the image around both ways - right / left and Top/ bottom - and then use the cloner to clone out the seams.
Worked very nicely and I was in control of making the tiles as seamless or not as I could.

How can I do this with GIMP?
The built in make-seamless filter doesn't work very well. It's fairly simple and it causes artifacts when I use the seamless tiles it creates.
The displace filter is doing something else apparently. It smears the image rather than rotating it?
I guess I could manually duplicate the layer 4 times and then move and align the layers and then flatten them. but that's a pain.

No better solution?

How do others make high quality seamless tiles?
