Making part of an image transparent.
I have an image that I am using as an app icon (embedded in a basic4android compilation). The image is in .png form and is a square with rounded corners. I want the corners to be transparent. When I outline the area I want to make transparent and then select clear it changes the current color (black) to white. When I use this saved file in my compilation the icon that it produces has corners that are white not transparent. How should I be doing this?

RE: Making part of an image transparent.
just in case, nypaulie,
after you add the alpha channel, *don't flatten the image
Clear the white spaces around the corners and it should show the grey checkered background.

Next, after naming your picture in "Export..." make sure the options:
[]save transparency
[]save background color (test this one on/off to see if it makes a difference)
are checked.

Make the compression 9 and click save.

Ofnuts is onto something with the tip not being 100%, using the magic wand/fuzzy select tool can select parts unevenly, you'll want to use the "free select" or "scissors" and maybe "alpha to logo" tool for a more accurate selection.

RE: Making part of an image transparent.
Before you select the white corner area that you want to be transparent that you right click on that layer and select Alpha to Selection (I'm presuming there's only one layer?), there's one way is to use the Select by Color tool and select the white corners area (all four corners should then have the marching ants) and then simply press the delete key, BUT, it will also select everything that is white on that layer, so if that's the case just use the eraser on the corners (maybe you only want 1, 2 or 3 corners of them transparent) to make them transparent, save as .png.
Hope that helped.
