- Colors/Desaturate
- set the current gradient to "Incandescent" or "German flag smooth"
- "Colors/Map/Gradient map": the whole picture has now got fire tones
- you can play with Curves/Levels on the desaturated layer to change the result
- Layers/Transparency/Add alpha channel
- Layer/Mask/Add layer mask, initialize to white
- Paint in black where you want the original color to reappear. For a nice blend, use a soft brush, set color to gray and opacity to something low (20-30%) and give several strokes. You can also use the airbrush.

How do I set the current gradient to "Incandescent" or "German flag smooth"???

this is what I ended up doing to get it to work...

- downloaded fire gimp fill patterns
- select the area in the middle of the wave
- invert selection
- fill the selection with fire fill pattern in overlay mode
- repeat last step a few times

I also put a Fire Type Pokémon in the middle...
