Make text look interesting - ideas?
Hello all,

A bit of a design ideas question, I suppose this is the best place to put it!

I'm designing a brochure for a charity ball for a local group I know. All the tables at the ball will have the name of a child on them and the brochure will have more information about that child so that diners can read a bit more about the child that their table was named after.

For example; a table might be named 'Jack' and the brouchure will have a short piece about him, like: "Jack, aged 9 - Autistic Spectrum Disorder". "Jack has severe learning difficulties and hypersensitive hearing. Jack is non-verbal but very noisy and loves to be outside in the garden or swimming at the local pool. Jack loves to be tickled and blah, blah, blah..."

There are about 30 kids to write about but how do I make these short paragraphs of text look interesting? I was thinking of a sort of cloud design (if that's the right word), where certain words in the text are bigger than others and perhaps some words are in different fonts but not sure how to easily achieve this.

I'm a bit stuck really and I wondered if you guys had any ideas? Also, I need it done in a few days time so I'm sort of up against the clock too.

Maybe you guys can give me some inspiration?

Thank you,
Nick.

If you are using Gimp 2.8.x then this came up a short while ago.
There is a little 4 min video on the absolute basics. http://youtu.be/ChcTE9KROmc

For more 'dramatic' effects you can convert the text to a path/selection and outline or fill with a pattern.

To be honest, Gimp is not the best tool for this type of work and Inkscape will do a better job.

Rich, thanks - that's very helpful and I'm sure I'll put that to use either on this project or one in the future. A bit labour intensive but it does give the cloud effect I was thinking of so that's something!

Any other ideas from you or anybody else then keep 'em coming!

Cheers,
Nick.

RE: Make text look interesting - ideas?
Ofnuts, agreed - I don't want to make it hard to read. I was thinking along the same lines as you re the pic of kid but the people I'm doing it for want the identities kept private - no no real names and no pics!

Since all the kids are on the autistic spectrum then maybe a background image based on the visible light spectrum, a blend background or something. I don't know, I'm kinda thinking out loud here!

Cheers,
Nick.
