Line Drawing
Absolute Newbie here. I'm wanting to do something seemingly very simple but I've never tried working with pictures before other than to resize or crop. How do I convert a simple picture to a line drawing? I hope the pic shows when I post. Thanks in advance. Bill

You would think it would be simple but...
Probably lots of ways. There are filters that will convert to a sketch or outline but that image has lots of detail and shadow to consider.

This is one way.

http://www.imageno.com/vs4ig4api0u2pic.html

1. Reduced the image to b&W using image -> mode -> indexed (use black & white)
2. Reversed the above back to mode -> RGB and saved it.
3. Converted this new image to a vector, several ways to do this, Inkscape produces a very complicated vector, so I used an on-line "free" service http://vectormagic.com (they still manage to extract an email addy from you, so use a throw-away one)
4. Import this into gimp - that's the middle image in the link.
5. Then it depends on how keen you are. Importing the vector as separate paths there are 800 of them, most very small because of the complex nature of the image. Start by turning path visibility on/off, then merging visible and stroking the path. I got up to around layer 100 and removed some of the small stuff in the center. That's the blue stroked image at the bottom of the link.

I will try and attach the svg for you to play around with.

edit:
looking for simple alternative to a vector.
You could try the gimp G'mic plugin http://gmic.sourceforge.net/
One of the gmic filters contours -> isophotes might work for you.
