Learning to use layers
I have been using GIMP for a few months and have managed to find my way round reasonably well. I now want to learn how to use layers and am beginning to think I am really dumb. I just cannot find a tutorial on Youtube which is comprehensible. No matter how hard I try I just cannot follow the tutors I have found. The biggest problem is no-one explains how they do what they say they are doing. e.g. "I now create a new layer in transparency mode. Now I will fill the layer with the colour green." But they never say how they do these things. Does anyone know of a tutorial for dummies that could at least get me started.

(Jan 12, 2014 09:19)ofnuts Wrote:  To create a layer: "Layer/New layer" and you have options for the initial fill (keep transparent, fill with white, fill with foreground color, fill with background color). Some actions may create layers implicitly (for instance using the Text tool). If your tutorial is talking about "transparency mode", find another tutorial, because there is no such thing as "transparency mode". A layer "mode" in Gimp is the way the layer blends with the layers under it (in the "Normal" mode, it acts as tracing paper, its opaque parts mask the layers under it).

For the rest, you have always worked with a layer. When you load an image from a JPG/PNG it is a layer, even if its the only one. Working with layers (plural) is mostly a matter of editing the right layer... (the Layers list becomes your best friend).

Gimp and Photoshop share the concepts of layers, so most things you find on the subject for Photoshop are also valid in Gimp.

RE: Learning to use layers
Thank you Nuts for replying.
I really appreciate it and will try and decipher what you are saying> May take me a few weeks though to translate!!
But I am still seeking a tutorial that will help me as per my question:
"Does anyone know of a tutorial for dummies that could at least get me started"
There are obviously some very clever people out there who can work with layers in GIMP. Unfortunately I am not one of them and GIMP doesn't supply any guidance that I can find.

RE: Learning to use layers
This guys youtube channel has some pretty good basics tutorials (my opinion)
https://www.youtube.com/user/PhotoAdvanced

I've found it useful to download tutorials in the highest resolution available and when an instruction is given write them down in a list.

There are books published for instruction in Gimp.
