Layers help
This is going to sound so dumb, I'm new to GIMP, downloaded v 2.8.2 today. I opened an image, selected duplicate layer, which was named image_name (copy) - so far so good, but when I make any changes to that it makes changes to both layers, I can NOT find instructions anywhere on how to select just the (copy) layer, one would think it would be automatic, that the program would only work on a single layer. Seems I thought wrong.
Hoping for some helpful suggestions, without anyone being rude.

RE: Layers help
Normally changes applies only to one layer (the one called the "active" layer), which is the one highlighted in blue in the Layers list(*), and in your case that would be the copy made, which is normally automatically selected after the duplication takes place.

How did you duplicate the layer (which menu or keyboard shortcut)? What kind of changes are you doing?

(*) to open the Layers list (but I think it's part of the dialogs opened by default) use "Windows/Dockable dialogs/Layers" or Ctrl-L, and to select a layer just click on its name and it should be highlighted in blue. The Layers dialog is explained here: But that may no be news to you.

PS: There is one case where you get a behavior similar to the one you describe: if you use "View/New view" then you get a new window with the same image contents in it. This is sometimes useful (one zoomed view to work with accuracy, and one smaller view to see the whole picture). In that case changes applied in one view are of course shown in the other.

RE: Layers help
As with anything, there is some learning involved.

Sometime have a look at the Gimp documents

When working on a layer, that layer is highlighted in the layer dialog. To select a layer click on it in the layer dialog. Layer Dialog = the box that is normally on the right side, I have detached it so you can see it better.
Then to see the layer underneath click on the eye icon to turn the visibility on/off.
