Layer boundaries

Layer boundaries
What's the point in being able to have a layer size that's different (that is, smaller) to the canvas size? For masking purposes it seems fairly limited due to it's rectangular limitations and seems to form a source of constant micromanagement, but I guess it wouldn't be a thing without a reason. Anyone know what it's purpose is?
