Keyboard shortcuts
I'm new to Gimp but am somewhat fami;iar with Photoshop and would like to be able to use Keyboard shortcuts in Gimp. I see only a very few. Can I make shortcuts for things I use regularly? I need shortcuts especially for levels. save, deselect, hide selection outline, and some tools-- Where will i find the answer if someone answers? Thanks

Thanks--I had been to that window before but hadn't figured out how to get the shortcuts like I want, but i have now. Thanks
another question-- In photoshop I can select part of an image and then go to Layer via copy and the selected area will float and when I move it the original image will be intact but when I do this in gimp--the background shows thru. How can I make this feature work like in photoshop?

RE: Keyboard shortcuts
It should work the same in Gimp. If the background appears, you did a Cut and not a Copy.

RE: Keyboard shortcuts
  • Select source layer]
  • Make a selection with the tool of your choice]
  • Edit/Copy
Then, either:
  • Edit/Paste as/New layer (creates the new layer in top left corner)
  • Edit/Paste (creates a "floating selection" with copied contents over source) and then either:
    • Layer/Anchor layer (Ctrl-H) (merges the floating selection in the active layer)
    • Layer/New (Ctrl-Shift-N) (creates new layer from floating selection)
The floating selection is a temporary layer and you can do many things with it before you commit it (but there are other things that you can't do). But this is a bit of a legacy concept from when layers where expensive to keep around (small RAM)(so the ancient technique was "copy/transform/anchor") . Nowadays you have better make a new layer from it and work on that layer.

Thanks that helped me a lot. I appreciate your help. I can begin to make some progress now but may ask for your help again when I get stumped.
