Issue with mask
Hi, I am trying to use the mask feature and have added the layer mask. However, when I use the brush to paint on the layer mask, it come out as transparent and not black.

When I paint on the image (as a test) the brush paints black, but when I paint on the actual layer mask, the brush paint as transparent.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any advice, Paul

Hi Paul,

You are doing nothing wrong.

When it comes to Layer Masks, black is considered transparent and white fully opaque.

Without knowing what you are trying to achieve with the mask, may I suggest using the Quick Mask feature. When you are happy with the result you could then create your Layer Mask from the created selection.

RE: Issue with mask
EDIT: beaten by ninja-bunny

so when you say layermask you actually mean layermask, not quickmask, right ?

you add a layermask to a layer by righclicking and then choosing 'add layermask'

when you add a white layermask, that means everything that is white on the layermask will be opaque
and everything painted black will be transparent, showing either the layer beneath it or, when there is no layer, a grey checkerboard representing transparency

so from your description, the layermask is working as it should be

what are you trying to do ?

What I am trying to achieve; I have a black and white image of an airship, and i want to mask the airship so that I can color the background.

RE: Issue with mask
okay, so you have the airship masked by painting with black on it ?

you need to reverse it

click on the layermask, so its active, then go to Colours -> Invert Colours
that will leave the airship and make the background transparent
