Issue with Layers and Lighten only mode
Greetings,
I am creating a montage of moon photos, using layers with the "lighten only" mode is set. I have one layer which refuses to overlay in lighten only mode. When I switch to "normal" mode, the image is visible, but it disappears when changed to lighten only.

See attachment for an example.

Any thoughts?
phil

And a small part of it is actually showing, so the question is what else masks it off? What is the mode of other layers? What do you have in the square North-East of the area I marked?

Wow - great eye and attention to detail. I noticed that as well - didn't know what to make of it.

The only difference between the two screen shots is the top one has "lighten only" mode set and the bottom one is "normal". Which is why this is vexing...

RE: Issue with Layers and Lighten only mode
oh yeah - and by clicking the other layers visible/in-cisible, the layer re-appears.
I've also noticed that by selecting the next layer and trying to move the layer it cuases the previous layer to disappear as well.
Very strange...

Thanks very much. Being a beginner, any help is appreciated. I've compressed the file using 7-zip as it is 365MB, which may be part of the problem... Alas, compressed it's still 100mb, which I can't upload.

Is there another way to get it to you? Or perhaps, there's a way to compress it?

Good deal. I've done that. Image 20140415-9717.tif disappears when "lighten only" mode is select. Returns on "normal".

I'm certain it's pilot error, just can't see it... (no pun intended...)
Much thanks,
pg

Trying again...
This is the original pdf of the issue.
And now the image resized down to 400px. Weird - wasn't getting any error msgs...

Hi,
I have looked at your .xcf file and I see the issue.
By moving the lower 4 layers to the left, you have created transparent areas on the right of each of those layers. It is those transparent areas that are affecting the Lighten Only mode.
Perform a Layer->Layer to Image Size on each of those layers.
Then select the transparent areas and fill them with the color black.

RE: Issue with Layers and Lighten only mode
Thanks very much for your fix. That worked. I imagine that's a pretty common technique using "lighten only" layers. Worked like a charm.
Here's the current version of the work.

That's a good point. I am a novice with this tool. Not even sure how I would erase the background. But you are correct - a star in the wrong place wouldn't work.
