I am new to GIMP and just joined the Forums. I notice I messed up the time during registration. GMP +/- went over my head.
I am a 72 year old DIY auto& truck mechanic and I wanted to learn GIMP so I could help others with common auto repairs. I am just getting starting and I was thinking of doing printed and maybe Youtube material using GIMP. I have 2.8 installed on my Win 10 64 bit desktop.

Frankly, the GIMP learning curve is tough for me. I wanted to print out an 81/2" x 11" Giimp image in portrait style with a jpg image on the top half of the image and create my own text on the bottom half. Spent hours and still can't figure out how to combine a jpg shot of the engine jpg on top and text in the lower half of the image. If anyone can give me the basic steps, would appreciate it. When I put in a jpg, it seems to automatically start another image separate from the text layer content. How do I get Jpg and text combined onto one image?

Thanks in advance for any help. Im getting callouses on my forehead.
