Install Gimp 2.8 (a TAR archive)
It was a great feeling to visit GIMP.org and see that the official GIMP 2.8 is now released.

But....it downloaded a .TAR archive and not a .EXE or anything else I'm familiat with. I was able to use PeaZip to extract individual files from the TAR Archive, but I still couldn't figure out how to install the program itself.

So can anybody list the steps necessary for installing GIMP 2.8 from the Tar archive, since there's apparently no alternative yet?

To install form a TAR archive you need a Linux system, otherwise it's a bit complicated.

I expect a full build to be available soon from here (they have the 2.8 release candidate already, at the bottom of the page): http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Oh, man. Thanks for the links there, OfNuts. But when I read the words, "Unstable installer" and I think of how easily I get frustrated....I think I'll just, sigh, wait for the stable release for Windows.

Thanks for the info and aid, as always.

Unstable does not mean 'flaky' in linux. 'Stable' is fixed and no longer developed, probably Gimp 2.6.12 will end up as stable. Unstable just means that it is under development and continues to be improved. The versions that can break your system come under the category of 'Testing'

Having said that, good idea to wait, I compiled Gimp 2.8 RC1 recently and by the time all the devel packages + dependencies were installed then a whole load of intermediate files created, there was 800-ish MB added to my installation. Just removed all this a couple of days ago and I will stick with 2.8RC1 until a Gimp 2.8 package is released for my distro.

Yeah. I just hope the stable 2.8 for Windows is released soon. I'll be checking the SourceForge page OfNuts linked to regularly. Of course, beggars can't be choosers....but I'm still anxious.
