Improve clarity
I have a HP PSC1610 all in one printer/scanner/copier It won't work on 1200 pixels a inch. For some reason 600 even 300 is clearer. My scans aren't as clear as I would like, is there interpolate on gimp , if so where is it. Can anyone suggest anything that would improve the clarity of the 600 scans.

RE: Improve clarity
It is worth experimenting with different filters depending on the image. I have an old canon lide30, great for documents, not so great for images but it works.

This screeshot compares 300, 600, 1200 ppi and the scanner interpolation does 'soften' at higher resolutions. Really unless scanning negatives/slides not really worth bothering above 600 ppi.

Worth looking at wavelet-decompose, example using the 600 ppi image.

There is a bit about it here,
I have a compiled linux plugin but there are windows plugins available
maybe or

If there is a regular pattern of defects, a more advanced procedure is a Fast Fourier Transform, needs a bit of practice to use.

As with anything there is usually a trade-off, sharpen and get noise, remove noise, back to a soft image.
