Import paths? No, import them correctly!
Seriously, this just doesn't make any sense.

I've spent a lot of time working on this vector image in Inkscape. I've saved it as a plain svg. I open it up in GIMP so I can make some adjustments on a bitmap level. I select the option to import the paths.

The image appears properly, just like it does in Inkscape. But the paths have turned all wonky; they are misaligned and in many instances are misaligned in just part of a path.

This just doesn't make any sense. If GIMP can read the svg file just fine and can properly create the graphic, why can't it properly create the paths it uses to create that graphic?

Inkscape can produce some dodgy SVG's Saving as plain does not guarantee much.

Do you have any path effects applied, envelope deformation, pattern along path - etc.
or clipping objects perhaps.

Are the paths the same when imported as paths rather than when opening the SVG. (clutching at straws)? Do you merge the paths? If not how many paths are there?

If possible a screen shot of the problem

No path effects other than stroking them.
Importing them as paths has changed nothing. I did not merge the paths. There are five paths; one of them is blank.

The parts that have come out wonky are vectors that I have altered in some particular ways. For example, I had a couple paths that I had scaled within inkscape at one point. Some were left as they are, others were merged with other paths, then they were all combined. Any vertex that came from a path that was scaled once was now offset from the original.
I had made another path by tracing the lines of a path, and it came out fine. But then I made some adjustments, and then everything -even parts I didn't adjust- got warped into an unexpected offset.

It could be that to create the border you scaled the text path, which does not give concentric paths but the sort of offsets you show.

To get a border with paths, try "stroke to paths" after increasing the size of the stroke.

Importing into gimp gives the correct spacing to the paths.

Just about packing in for the night, doing this on a netbook and half watching the TV so it is a struggle Wink Maybe one of the southern hemishere contingent will have some ideas.

Did the svg import into Gimp as one layer? Can you attach (if under 1mb) the .xcf of just the imported svg into gimp so we can take a look.

Some testing:
After you import the SVG, try clicking
Layer > Layer to image size

To extend the boundary size of the imported layer. I suspect its something to do with the canvas being smaller than the Inkskape svg space created.

EDIT: Also, what font did you use & size of font, did you trace in Inkscape?
and what was the resolution (1024, etc) in Inskcape canvas & Gimp canvas (Image > Canvas size, or project title bar) ?
