Images won't export as indexed
I am trying to save some images as indexed, but I need to convert them to RGB to edit them. When I am done editing them, I convert them back to indexed and overwrite the original file. However, when I open the file up again, it is RGB. What am I doing wrong, and how can I get the files to actually save as indexed?

Thanks!

RE: Images won't export as indexed
The only things I can think of:

Exporting the image to jpeg. Save as xcf or export to png, tif or gif should retain indexed mode.

but then you are overwriting the original. What format are the original indexed files? Can you post one for checking?

RE: Images won't export as indexed
These are game sprites, and have to be saved as indexed .bmps. I open the image, convert to RGB, and then when I am done, I convert back to indexed and overwrite the original bmp. I have done this in the past and it has always worked for me, but for some reason they seem to not be saving as indexed anymore. Maybe something about the newer version of Gimp I am using? I also always used to use the normal save option, but now I need to export, so I think this may have something to do with it.

Hi maximum411
What options are you choosing in the Export dialog?

RE: Images won't export as indexed
Tried all ways but can not reproduce an indexed bmp opening as RGB.
I do have a a Gimp 2.6 in a WinXP VM and I have been making test files with that as well. Running through ImageMagick for properties does not show up anything.

Once in indexed mode the bmp will be 8 bit so there are none of the usual options.
The only difference between the Gimp 2.6 dialog and and Gimp 2.8 dialog is the "do not write color space information"

Funny because I can... In the attached zip, two bitmaps produced by 2.6 (Windows) and 2.8 (Linux). ImageMagick's Identify sees them rather similar:
Code:
Indexed-2.6.bmp BMP 200x200 200x200+0+0 1-bit PseudoClass 2c 5.66KB 0.000u 0:00.010
Indexed-2.8.bmp BMP 200x200 200x200+0+0 1-bit PseudoClass 2c 5.73KB 0.000u 0:00.000

Their sizes are compatible with a 1-bit indexing, even if the 2.8 one is a bit bigger (it has
extra data in the header, but I have not yet unraveled the file to figure out what these are).

But in Gimp 2.8, loading the 2.6 one gives an indexed image, while the 2.8 one loads as RGB. The question remains to know if the problem is when the image is loaded (in which case the produced BMP would still be OK for other software) or when it is saved. ImageMagick seems to think it's the former.

RE: Images won't export as indexed
OK, so that's just a problem when loading. My Gimp2.8 Linux is a bit out of date. Checking with my 2.8 windows and it indeed loads both as indexed. So, maximum411, what Gimp version aere you running? It seems that an upgrade would fix the problem.

RE: Images won't export as indexed
Thanks for your help guys! I was running 2.8.0 so I upgraded to 2.8.1 and that did fix the problem. I was thinking it was an issue with exporting, but I guess not! Although I guess, as you said, the file header is changed a little bit when you export.
