RE: image window size
Resize it, and then "Edit/Preferences -> Windows management/Window positions" and then either check "Save windows positions on exit" or uncheck it but click "Save windows positions now"

Thanks for your post. I guess I should be more specific. When I open gimp there it a bare image window. It is way too big. When I go to "help" resize it gives me instructions about how to resize a photo that is sitting in the image window.

What I would like is to make the empty image window take its rightful size in proportion with the rest of the gimp opening page. if that requires resize please explain how to do it.

Thank a lot for your patience,
Angster

RE: image window size
Resize the window like any window, by dragging the borders or corners.

RE: image window size
That is precisely the problem: one cannot simply resize the layers window (my problem) by dragging the borders or corners, because the lower edge (as well as the lower right-hand corner) is too far down, sitting underneath the menu/start bar where one cannot use the mouse/pointer to do anything.

RE: image window size
In that case, shrink it from the top, then move it up. There are also ways to resize and move the window using the just the cursor keys and the right keyboard shortcuts. With a bit of training you can even bring back on screen a windows which is completely off-screen. Ask in Windows-related forums.
