image cropping to a pre-selected size
Here is what I would like to do, and would appreciate links to tutorial or instructions.

Set the size of a template, say 800 x 600. Then have a template appear, outlined by dashes or straight lines. The template is 800 x 600. Then, be able to move this template, using the mouse, over an opened image which remains still, so that, when the desired position in the image is achieved (with the selected height and width), the template can be released and then the image cropped to the template's size.

Sorry the proper terms are not used.

Welcome George.

Open your image.
Choose the Crop Tool Crop
Ensure you have the Tool Options dialog open (Windows-> Tool Options)
Check 'Fixed Size'
Enter 800x600
Then click on your image and 'template' will appear.
You can drag the template with the mouse to any position over your image as desired.

Under the View menu there are a number of 'Snap to ...' options that may assist you positioning the crop template.
