im a PS user and need help with gimp
ello all i am new here have a few questions i need to get answered please. Ihave been using photoshop for bout 10 years. my first verison was 5.5. My question is this:
In photoshop 7 and the newest version as well, if i write out a block of text, i can go to the top of the page and select the "create warp text" option. this allows me to make basic shapes for texts like the arc, fisheye, circle, wave or squeeze effect. Im hopping the gimp can do the same thing with the same amount of ease. I do not want to spend alot of time drawig lines and attaching the text to that.ranted that is awesome for some applicans but i just want a warped text fast for a flyer.

thanks guys.

Matt

Well, tough luck, because in Gimp you have to draw the lines (see text-along-path). Doesn't mean it takes that much time, though. For some more complex distortions, you can look at this: http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/repo...-warp-text

ah, thats cool my friend. i will learn how to do that then. Where are the best places to look for tutorials for that specific text to path? I know i can google it and get basic ones but what about more complicated cool ones that you guys here trust?

thanks. i look forward to making some cool things. I want to learn how to make newsletters for emails next. haha

RE: im a PS user and need help with gimp
I did this one some time ago in Gimp 2.6, a few things have changed in Gimp 2.8 but the basics are the same

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ct4yDEX6Dw

What has changed, the text tool mainly and how text-on-path is invoked.
see http://gimpforums.com/thread-text-along-path--4606

(edit: this one is about warping text using a script
http://youtu.be/HlCEW8UOj4o
again much easier/quicker using Inksacape)

If it is for a flyer, Inkscape might be a better tool, still no automatic shapes and there is a learning curve. Another alternative is an office application such as LibreOffice where there is a wordart function with preset shapes.

RE: im a PS user and need help with gimp
thanks guys for all the tips. i will try out some cool things with it tomorrow at work. I may be using it for a flyer but i would like to get the the point where i can make a newsletter to email to people. this would basically be a mini static web page that has been sliced up and has hot spots. I have found something called scripts.FU and they say it works for 2.8. going to try it out and see what it does.

i have used inkscape and i didnt really like it to much. i love powerpoint and i prefere office over libre and open office. i have used all 3 for many years and office 2007 is a we bit cleaner in my opinion. anyway, i look forward to using the gimp more. oh before i forget, what would i google for tuts on my newsletter? how to make a webpage with gimp or how to slice images or make hotspots?

thanks guys

adding a glow to text along path
ok, so i have been having some fun learning how to use the selection tools and adding text to a path. Its a new process in a way for me. but i think i have it done. I have created some text along a path. the first layer of text is black, then i created a second layer based off of the same path selection and made it neon green. i applied a blur to the green text layer and now its is where i want it to be. My only concern is how to rotate the text layers all at once so that they dont get all messed up. i thought i had it positioned the way i wanted, but you know how editing can go. its not final until its final. haha. I am just trying to rotate all the layers that are being used for my text to the same area. Is there a way to select multiple layers to rotate at once or do i have to do each layer individually

thanks

RE: im a PS user and need help with gimp
You have separate layers, create a layer group and drag those layers into it.
Then apply the rotation to the layer group as this screenshot
http://www.imageno.com/krp16vdb7qsxpic.html (imgur seems down at the moment)

The points to notice are.
Make sure you are on the correct transform in the rotate tool options (layer should be default)
You can move the center of rotation (the 'bulls-eye' in the center of the grid) around by clicking and dragging also useful to create a couple of guides for you own use.
Then on the right hand side the layer group. You make one of these either in the layer menu or with the blue-folder icon bottom of the layers dialog.

Not shown on the screen shot. If you spent a lot of time rendering your text-path, save it as an svg file. Right click in the layers dialog and and look for export and import near the bottom. Then you can easily use it again in another image.
