.ICC Convert to Colour Profile Impossible. Help.
Hi.

I'm very frustrated that I can't find a way to import an .icc into my GIMP work.

I want to do this so that the pictures on my computer monitor match as closely as possible to the prints from my local (high-end) print shop. My screen is Spyder calibrated.

I'm trying;

Image >>> Mode >>> Convert To Colour Profile >>> (and then from the pop-up box) >>> Convert to ... (and then from the pop-up box) >>> Select Colour Profile From Disk

... and then I select the new .icc (provided to customers on the print shop's website) from a Downloads folder on my local drive.

That all sounds right doesn't it?

It stubbornly remains on sRGB.icc

I've also tried the process in;

Edit >>> Preferences >>> Colour Management

Same result - ignores the selection of a new .icc and remains stuck on sRGB.icc.

Damn.

I'm desperately trying to colour correct for printing today.

Help me Obi-Wan, help me.

Going to be a problem, since Gimp works in RGB mode. You monitor profile, the .icm might not have much bearing on what comes out of your local (high-end) print shop - high end - the worst sort.

It should not make much difference where the colour profile 'something.icc' is, I generally keep them along with the other gimp resources in my local folder .gimp-2.8 What does matter is the colour model, if this icc comes from a "high end print shop" is it CMYK ?, if so it is not going to work.

FWIW
Screenshots of my conversion steps, although the same as yours, except I used 'convert-to' instead of assign. Makes no difference here.

and a comparison of original, another rgb and my monitor profile. Shows the conversion does stick. http://i.imgur.com/jfF0r.jpg

If it is a CMYK icc profile you have, you can convert your image using Imagemagick. Something along the lines of; (high end always wants psd, lol)

convert 'rgb_file.ext' -colorspace cmyk -profile 'icc_file.icc' 'cmyk_file.psd'

You wont be able to open this in Gimp but you will be able to view with something like XnView.

Digging in my archive, there was a meet-the-gimp episode about cmyk printing: episode 47. see the archives at the Meet The Gimp site.

No, I get what you're saying and I'm realistic. I'm trying to take a step forward and I understand that discrepancies will remain. The shop is amazingly helpful and I just wanted to differentiate its cooperation and understanding from a Main Street "Snappy Snaps"-type outlet.

"It should not make much difference where the colour profile 'something.icc' is"

Well, that's one question answered then. Not that as the problem.

Agh, dammit - this is the bit where I get stumped. Just can't get this to happen ... hmm ... I won't know whether I get closer with Spyder-calibration and this .icc in combo until I overcome this step.

Oh, no waitaminute ... A-HA!! Got it.

I have no idea why it is working today but the only change I have made is to update from Gimp 2.6 to 2.8. And to move the file around to different locations. Some dumb luck has paid off.

Thank you for your informed reply - I will take on board the additional info you have provided and view the link posted to CMYK issues.
