I want my Main Toolbox back
I've only recently downloaded GIMP 2.8 and have the 2.6 manual, so I am a rank beginner. Right now I'm overwhelmed by GIMP's complexity, so please put any responses in words suitable for a six year old. Please remember that I haven't done anything in GIMP yet except fidle around with the menu bar.

On page 32 of the manual there is a screenshot of the Main Toolbox with an image window and some dialogs. The manual says that to close the Main Toolbox shuts down GIMP, and I have seen a screen similar to the screenshot when I first installed GIMP.

But when I opened GIMP this afternoon after getting the manual all I saw was a blank screen containing only the top of Wilber's head. I have no idea what I did to make the Main Toolbox and image window go away.

How do I get the Main Toolbox and image window back? Or can I use GIMP without the Main Toolbox?

Regards, Alex

RE: I want my Main Toolbox back
Bless you. I must have spent an hour yesterday frantically reading the manual and going through the various menus. I now have most of the Main Toolbox on the screen, though not the menu bar at the top. Is this a difference between 2.8 and 2.6?

I also have on the screen some things like Tool Options which appeared when I was exploring yesterday. How do I close that box.

By the way, I should have mentioned that I am using Windows 7.

Regards, Alex

By default Gimp remembers you window setup between sessions... The most important feature of the Gimp UI is that you can group dialogs together in windows to organize the UI to your liking (in the animation below, the yellow is where you should click to start your drag and where you should drop).

Thanks

I have the manual in front of me. It says GIMP User Guide 2.6 on the cover and the spine.

The screenshot is on page 32, and shows on top of the Main Toolbar a line saying The GIMP, and below that File Extras Help. This may well be a screenshot from 2.4.

Thanks for the video; it worked, and I now know a little more than I did.
