Question I'm feeling RAW
I've been trying for hours to get a plug-in for NEF (Nikon 'RAW') files to work and the more I try, as a GIMP newbie, the more frustrated I become. Perhaps I should explain that I shoot in NEF to get minimal losses and artifacts when post-editing. My set-up is:
GIMP 2.8.10
Win 7 Pr0 64 bit
I find the instructions at http://registry.gimp.org/node/31 very difficult to understand for my weak and ancient intellect; I was hoping to find a file that just slipped in somewhere and that was that! This was not helped by the author's comments on Windows; they may, in part, be justified but such derogatory statements make me think he hasn't really bothered to make an effort to produce a workable plug-in for Win.

Please, can anyone guide me into finding a way so that clicking Open will show me a menu of available NEF files in the opened directory, using no arcane words longer than, say, 3 letters?

RE: I'm feeling RAW
For the time being, forget it, it's not worth it. Gimp only works in 8-bit, and if you use NEF (12 or 14 bits/channel) you have to do all the color and level processing before you edit in Gimp if you really want to benefit form the higher bit depth of NEF.

So, do your RAW processing with whatever software you have at hand (Nikon Capture or else), save as high quality JPEG (or TIFF/PNG if you are paranoid about compression losses) and do your "local" editing in Gimp.

Thanks muchly, Ofnuts. I wonder whether "For the time being" means that you may be aware of GIMP being developed for more bits?

RE: I'm feeling RAW
Gimp 2.10 will support 16-bit, 32-bit, and floating point processing.

RE: I'm feeling RAW
I have a similar sort of problem, which has only appeared since I upgraded to GIMP 2.8.10.

Previously, I was using UFRAW on my NEF files when I needed to make exposure adjustments before doing cropping etc in GIMP, but since the upgrade I can't reinstall UFRAW using MacPorts. (I have an iMac, with OS 10.9.2). Although Finder regards GIMP as the default application for NEF files, if I double-click a NEF file GIMP opens a 160x120 image which I think is probably the embedded JPG thumbnail.

There is an error message when I try, which relates to the installation of "pango":

Error: org.macports.archivefetch for port pango returned: cairo must be installed without +quartz.

From information gained by Googling, I understand that GIMP needs to have cairo installed with +quartz, so I can't just uninstall cairo and reinstall it without the +quartz option.
