Howdy, yall!
William "Billy" Greenacre here. I was a long time Photoshop user back when it was Photoshop 8. The computer it resided on died and after I replaced the computer I did not have time to fiddle with graphics much. Now, I'm retired and am now a GIMP user. I am amazed at what this program does, but want to push it to its very limit. I am also an Inkscape and Blender user.Idea

Thanks,

BillyG

Wayul, we could mebbe work sumthin' out. I have been strugglin' with Blender for a while now. Just when I started to get a grip on the danged thing, they went and changed it up so much that I could barely recognize it.

The GIMP, as it turns out, is almost a piece of cake if you already know Photoshop. The only thing that'll get in your way is when you go to do something the way you did in Photoshop and the GIMP does not do it the way Photoshope does. I have been spending a lot of time going through every forum I can find and learning a little bit every where I go.

Doing the same with Blender has proven less fruitful. A guy named Neal Hirsig over at Tufts University has put all of his instructional materials online. When it comes to the latest version of Blender, I cannot sing enough praises about Professor Hirsig. I learned more for free from his materials than I did from any other source. There is another fellow who proclaims himself to be the "Blender Guru," but he goes so fast that I can almost never keep up with him. Worse, I dislike his voice. He cannot help that his voice is irritating any more than I can help sounding like a Texican when I speak, but his voice makes it even more difficult for me to follow his instructions.

The real challenge I face right now is hog-tying Inkscape. I purchased the book, but only got just so far until I became frustrated with it. Inkscape would have a go at Blender if they thought that they could get away with it.

Seeya,

BillyG.

RE: Howdy, yall!
hah, i think i know of the blender guru... on youtube? i have some vids i found useful ill look em up and post em later (no annoying voices), but the forums for me are just way to overpowering, i learn better by doing actual things and just jumping in and when i go to the forum i dont know how to explain anything yet and then when id get a reply (if) it would all be gibberish to me. i hate making people explain so i troll youtube 'till i find something useful then get sucked in and change my mind about what i was going to do anyhow, its a vicious non successful caucus race for me at this point.
catch ya later

RE: Howdy, yall!
The good thing about Neal Hirsig is that his coverage of modeling and lighting is systematic and thorough. The Blender Guru, on the other hand, is very youthful and acts that way--he skips around a great deal. I have purchased at least two books on Blender and downloaded another. The one I downloaded was the best and it cost me nothing but the time it took to download. Unfortunately, that book is now dated thanks to the recent upgrades to Blender. The author of it was begged for an update, but he refused, saying that he did not believe that the techniques he used would work in the updated version of Blender. I have since discovered that he was incorrect, but have not tracked him down to inform him of that fact.

Anyway, Blender has been moving ahead so rapidly that I have despaired of keeping pace with the changes. My hardware, just like me, is on the elderly side and is also having trouble doing much of what Blender is requiring of it.

I decided that I would model scenes in Blender and then use The Gimp to do both the color and texture work one would ordinarily do in a 3D package. I am much more intrigued with Inkscape now than I was with Blender. There is a great deal of 3D Work that can be done in Inkscape that I had once planeed to do in Blender. I am thinking that Blender must necessarily wait until I can spend more money on my hardware.

Right now, I am trying to compile The GIMP 2.7.4 on my main cpu so that I can get a look at it and see how well it will perform on my hardware. I am fearful that a hardware upgrade may well be required to run the newly updated versions of The GIMP. At least I personally will have a chance at keeping up with the changes in this program, even if my hardware runs it in a sluggish fashion.

Regards,

BillyG
