How to set gradually changing opacity of a layer?
Hello fellow GIMPers Smile
I was wondering how to make a layer's (in this case the CHESSBOARD layer) opacity gradually change from 0 to 100, so that for exmple the left side of the picture is hardly visible (low opacity) and going rightwards the opacity would gradually increase, c.a. 50 in the middle to eventully reach 100 on the very right side.

I am talking about the highlighted CHESSBOARD layer

Set your Foreground Color to Black.
Set your Background Color to White.
Choose the Blend Tool.
Set the Gradient to FG/BG (RGB)
Set the Gradient Shape to Linear
In the Layers dialog, right click your Chessboard layer and choose Add Layer Mask.
In the dialog that appears, choose White (Full Opacity)
Then click on the Layer Mask in the Layers dialog
Apply the gradient using the blend tool from left to right across your canvas.
