How to select an egg-shaped region
hi guys
i'm trying to make a sprite of an egg for a project of mine, but i can't exactly get it to an 'egg' shape. i use the elipse selection tool to choose a region, but i've played around with the options a little bit and can't seem to get it. the only way i can seem to get a relatively egg-like shape is if i carefully shave off the edges of the upper part of it, but then it's not as symmetrical as i'd like it to be.
i've been using gimp for some time now and have relatively good experience with it, but this is one part where i'm stuck at.
This is the picture of what i have done so far. personally i think it looks fine, i just need to fix it's shape.
help greatly appreciated Smile

RE: How to select an egg-shaped region
I expected the perspective tool, applied to a circle (selection pr path) to produce an egg. But it doesn't. In retrospect, egg curves are not that easy to define mathematically.

Your best solution is to create an egg-shaped path. Depending on your skill with paths, you can insure symmetry either by:
  • using guides for both anchor points and control handles
  • create the path symmetric by design:
    • creating one half (say, "Left")
    • create "Right" by duplicate/flip (Flip tool in "path transform" mode)
    • remove the anchors at both ends of one half (say, "Right")
    • merge Left and Right path
    • connect the remaining points of the stroke from "Right" to the endpoints of the stroke from "Left"
One you have a path to your liking, use "Path to selection"

In the attachment, I used the second method, and left the intermediate path so you have it in slow motion...

RE: How to select an egg-shaped region
How about starting with a photo of an egg and finding/using its edge with an edge-finder filter?
