Question How to put parts of an image back together in GIMP?
When trying to scan magazine photos or pictures, they're often too big to fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 scanner. So inevitably they have to be scanned in pieces. How does one go about putting the pieces back together in GIMP so you have one complete, seamless image again?

RE: How to put parts of an image back together in GIMP?
Your best bet isn't Gimp but a panorama tool such as Hugin (which is free, too). It has an option to indicate that images come from a flatbed scanner.

Otherwise, with Gimp, but this assumes that there are no geometry issues (tilt/size). you would load the various images as layers in a canvas big enough to contain the final image and move things around. Using a semi-transparent mode may make things easier. For very accurate positioning, you can temporarily use "difference" mode: the layers are subtracted from each other, so a perfect match leads to complete black. Minute shifts make the edges show up as in a wire frame drawing.
