How to open 32bit BMP in GIMP 2.8
Hello,

In my old version of GIMP for OS X (the one that runs in XWindows), I can open 32bit BMP images exported from Inchworm Animation on my Nintendo DS. The alpha channel is preserved. GIMP was the only program I knew of which would open these -- even Photoshop ignores the alpha.

The new version however seems to have lost this ability -- say it isn't so! Anyone know how to open BMP images with alpha channels in the new GIMP?

Thanks
Bob

On mine (Gimp 2.8.10 Mac, Mavericks) the transparent part show up as black. In the file browser, it identifies the file as RGB 1 layer, instead of what it should probably show, RGB-alpha.

Thanks -- I hope they fix it. The comments in that link make it seem like they aren't sure it should be fixed.

RE: How to open 32bit BMP in GIMP 2.8
In the meantime with your file I found that you can bring back the transparency while preserving the black lines.

So you could make a rectangle selection around the sprites with black lines (command + click to add to the selection) undo if you select too much of a tile.

Select all the tiles which you know contain black lines.

2 Select > Invert
3 Colors > Color To Alpha
- Pick black
- Click ok

OK thanks -- although for now I will probably just use the old version of GIMP.

Same result in PClinuxOS and Gimp 2.8.10, no alpha channel

A possible work-around, Opens ok in XnViewMP, converts to a png, ....blah-de-blah-blah

there is an OSX version, don;t know if it works.

RE: How to open 32bit BMP in GIMP 2.8
It seems to me that hardly anyone uses 32 bit BMP with alpha except in these old legacy cases. I don't know why they would break compatibility with it. Honestly the ability to load that old format is the only reason I even used GIMP. I'm using that XnViewMP program now for that purpose.
