How To Make an Image Black and White?
I have some downloaded .png images - sheet music - where the score is too grey, too faint to be seen usefully.

Tried duplicating the layer and merging down. That didn't seem to help.

Tried changing brightness and contrast. That didn't seem to help.

Tried duplicating, changing layer mode to 'multiply' and then merging down. That didn't seem to help.

Thought of simply changing the image to just black and white like I used to do with Paint Shop Pro, but I couldn't find how to do that.

On the advice about the 'multiply' mode that I read there was no mention of the image mode: greyscale, RGB or Indexed. I see these documents come as 'greyscale'. And I tried a change to RGB but it seemed to not help at all.

I would like to find a way to do this if anyone can help?

And I've got 8O of them to do so a batch process if that is possible would be good.

I've just put an example up on IMGUR but damn me if it doesn't like fine up there - take it from me, it's not fine in reality, prints out like vague grey wisps of smoke...

You could use the levels tool or the curves tool to try to darken the colors in your image. If you are just trying to make the image black and white, use the Colors>Hue-Saturation tool and turn the Saturation all the way down to -100.

Thanks for that. But I think we're not supposed to use this forum any more. have to go to gimp-forum.net

Actually there's a thread somewhere on the net that solves it all. How to do it and how to do it in batches. Because I now remember I had this problem before and it got solved.

Some of the music is not only faint but the staff lines are so poorly reproduced that they're actually dashed lines. You know? A series of short strokes almost dots.

I have this vague memory of this very knowledgeable poster who showed me how to deal with that and then directed me to some third party add-on or something that enabled the batch processing...
