2) "Filter/Render/Shape path/Star": uncheck the "Stroke" box and picke your values
3) Click OK. The path is created, but left invisible (you will find it in the Paths list)
4) "Edit/Stroke path", and use Line mode. You can set the join style for a pointy start or for rounder spikes.

Anyone who suggests "Filters/Render/GFig" for this should have a talk with his/her optometrist.
I don't want to step on anyone's toes but I kinda like the built in plugin(gfig) and I didn't even know it existed lol!

It's quite customizable, you can change the shape, scale and fill & stroke of the star/shape. It takes a little getting use to but its decent.
You can even add different types of gradient fills.
I was able to make an outliined star similar to jamieman's sample.

But I'm assuming there is something wrong with it? (maybe t0o simple of a plugin, ugly lines made?)
P.S. the black & gray gradient isn't the only gradient style, there are normal gradients you can pick too.

RE: how to make a star outline
The OP's post was answered, with the shape-path script but an interesting recent plug-in
http://www.arakne.es/en/dessign/gimp-scr...e-creator/

This will fit a shape into or around a selection.

Not necessarily the correct orientation and limited to rectangles, squares, polygons and stars. Worth bearing in mind.

It produces very jagged lines (and sometimes even wavy ones). This is visible on your screenshot.
Yep, time to see the eye doctor LOL, no I see the jaggies in the grey/black star.
Thanks for the laughs ^^
