How to get smoothest possible edges
I have many objects that I am adding a very thin black border to, but I was finding when using GIMP I kept getting fairly jagged edges. So I researched it a bit and found some tips but I'm still not satisfied.

Below I've drawn 4 circles using anti aliasing, diameter 117, 118, 119 and 120... I wanted to see if maybe an oddball circle radius created more pixilation, then I did the following suggestions after Googling topic:
http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?showtopic=1552

But they still don't look great (see below)...

I then thought I'd try using a selected circle and convert selection to line using "stroke selection", still not good...

Can anyone create a super crisp edge on say a 120x120 black circle on a white back ground?

Thanks,

Vanz

If you print at 300DPI you won't see them. To make it worse, you are making a rather small circle so pixels are about 1% of the diameter, making them all the more visible. If you were making a bigger circle is would look comparatively smoother.

Note that the link you refer to is not about smooth edges, but about soft ones, to blend the object in a non uniform background, which is a somewhat different problem (other compromises can be made).

I guess my question should be reworded then:

"What technique(s) provide the best possible edges on smaller objects in GIMP?"

or maybe:

"How can you get the sharpest possible edges on small objects in GIMP?"

The gist of my post is I'm trying to get the nicest, sharpest looking edges in GIMP on a bunch of small objects < 200x200...

Thanks,

Vanz

Now, if you find on the web small black-on-white objects that look really sharp on your screen we can try to figure out how they were done.

Thanks ofnuts, I guess I could start experimenting with different shades of dark grey on the perimeter to see if that makes the edges look a bit sharper...

Look at them sharp edges, how do I get that in GIMP?

Good advice thanks...

There's a few operations I always do to an image just before an export, is there a way to batch process them with a macro in GIMP? So, for example, I could hit a hot key say "F9" and GIMP would execute 4 macros in a row?
