How to draw a straight line with the GIMP.
I would like to know how to draw a straight line with the GIMP. In a CAD environment I would use the line tool with an orthographic snap. Is there a grid tool or orthographic constraint in the GIMP. Also in CAD I can draw a line by specifying the coordinates of the line.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forums, sepoto.

Here is how you can draw a straight line in GIMP:
Pick up for example the paintbrush tool > Simply click on the image where you want to start the line (this will make a dot) > After that hold down the shift key and drag the mouse pointer to a place where you want the line to finish > Finally finish it with a mouseclick.

Doesn't work for me. Nothing ever shows on the screen. (Not even the dot. I tried changing the foreground and back ground colors; I change the brush width; I tried the smudge tool but I get nothing.

I tried a new image and I don't think I have more than one layer as the merge layer option is grayed out.

I using GIMP 2.8.8 with Windows 7.

I opened a new image (one layer) and made sure the pencil is set to Mode normal. I reset the brush settings to default. I get nothing. I changed the foreground color and still get nothing.

Most of the other things on that list mean nothing to me.

Thanks,
Bob

Can you post a screenshot of the Tool options for the pencil?
I'm curious to know which brush you have selected and what dynamic you are using...

What's antialiasing or maybe I should ask what's aliasing?

I have tried to load an attachment for over an hour with no success. I Browse, locate the file, click on ass attachment and then waiting for forum upload/approval which does nothing but clear the Browse box. Looked in Help and Googled for help and found nothing about Gimp attachments. Where are the guidelines (files types, sizes) for attachments?

thread resurrection muhaha, anyways

Hey Bob, here is a video-visual representation with the "tool options" visible.
Gimp is self contained, so its the same brush method no matter the Operating system.

On the left, the Pencil, on the right, the Paintbrush (using the same settings, in particular the same brush):

PS; all these lines have been drawn by hand, using the technique discussed above. They are also exactly 15° apart, using "constrained angles" (depress the Control key after the Shift key). They are also exactly the same length: a pair of guides to determine their common starting point and a circle path for their end (using "View>Snap to active path").

Here's the screen shot.

Thanks for the screenshot Bob.
The reason you are not seeing any pencil lines is that you have the pencil's 'brush' set to the 'clipboard' and your clipboard is empty.

Click the icon to the left of the word 'Clipboard' in the tool options and then select the brush you want to use.
Or click on the word 'Clipboard' and type '1' to select the select '1. pixel' brush for example.

That should solve your issue.

  • Check the brush you are using. If set to the 'clipboard', the clipboard contents may have changed. Try with another brush.

To add to the above comment by FB, this was also on the checklist Wink
