How to cut lots of pieces from 1 layer and create many layers
Hello,

I'm trying to create a nice example of a paintscheme. In order to do this correctly I need to cut lots of pieces from a picture taken from the original truck end make them in to several layers.

Now I have done this, as you can see here, not very well. There are a lot of lines that aren't cut very nice and smooth. Most of this cuts I did with the scissors tool. The tank I cut with the path tool.

What is the best way to cut pieces from images?

ps the coloured pieces are experimental Smile

It's not that bad... Scissors and path are OK. You can sometimes get slightly better results if you feather the selection by one or two pixels (depending on image definition). For very complicated shapes (natural objects) you can use a layer mask: duplicate the main layer, add a layer mask, paint black on the mask where it should be transparent. A fuzzy brish is used when working on the border. But this technique isn't very efficient with a mouse, it works much better with a tablet (better control of moves, and opacity can be adjusted with pressure).

But what saves the most work is starting with a good picture, and in that case the difference between a compact camera and a DSLR is staggering (even an second-hand entry-level one). If I were to do this, I would have 1) waited for a slightly cloudy day (to avoid sunrays through the roof windows ), or even come later in the day and shoot using the artificial lighting (this would also avoid parasitic reflections of the surroundings, especially if the lighting is restricted to the truck) and 2) used a tripod (exposure can get to long for hand-held, and anyway it makes the picture sharper)

Thanks a lot!! I'm not that familiar with layer mask but I should give it a try then. Maybe I should look for some tutorials.
